We are all taking photos all the time – probably more with our mobiles, but many with cameras too. Photography is an amazing way to express yourself and make a statement about the world around you – hence my idea of the Apollon International Photo Competition for Teenagers themed #EmbracingDiversity.
You’ve got until January 10, 2020 to submit your photos, but I thought of giving 5 tips to help you get started to becoming a great photographer!
- PERSISTENCE
You need to have patience and persistence – keep taking photos, posting them, developing your Instagram account and don’t give up. Those with thousands and millions of followers didn’t do it in one day!
- LISTEN AND LEARN
Ask for feedback and seek out advice from others who know more. If someone is only negative about your photograph, they are not the right people to listen to. You should hear about the things you have got right, as well as those which can be improved on. It should be about fixing technical faults, and not changing your style, which should be your own and unique.
- FIND YOUR NICHE
There are so many things to photograph, so many genres so try to find one particular type. Decide whether it’s portrait, landscapes, food, sports, action, buildings, fashion – there are so many. Follow blogs in your niche and develop your knowledge and style.
- FIND A MENTOR or GROUP
With the internet, it is now very easy to find top photographers online and get advice. Remember though that the people you approach will be working professionals and probably need a fee. Before doing that though, there are many tutorials online you can make use of to learn. You can also join numerous photography groups to gain further knowledge.
- TAKE PART IN COMPETITIONS
Taking part in competitions gives you experience and the opportunity to test yourself against other photographers. It’s especially valuable when you partake in those which are for similar age groups or experience.
